Cranfield Traditional Etching Black
Cranfield
Traditional black inks for intaglio printmaking.
As a manufacturer of fine art printmaking inks for generations, Cranfield follows historic formulations that have basically remained unchanged for centuries but still offer equally powerful and highly resistant results in a wide range of inks and for all types of intaglio techniques.
Cranfield Traditional ink can be cleaned with petrol or vegetable oil (gentler on the printer and the planet!). It contains no siccatives and uses high-quality black pigments with a lightfastness on the Blue Wool Scale (BWS) of 8/8.
Review of the different blacks:
Mid Black
PBk7 (C.I 77266) Furnace carbon black
Opaque
Lightfast rating (BWS) 8
item number: BKC 1810
A versatile‚ mid-toned Carbon Black (PBk7) ink with low viscosity & low tack. Our Mid Black works particularly well for images with LINE. It has a soft feel and wipes evenly & easily to give a strong print. This ink allows the printmaker full control of the amount of ink left on the plate.
Aquatint Black
PBk7 (C.I 77266) Furnace carbon black
Opaque
Lightfast rating (BWS) 8
item number: BKC 1812
A strong‚ mid-toned Carbon Black with medium viscosity & high tack. Aquatint Black works particularly well for images with TONE e.g. Aquatint. Although this initially ink feels stiffer than Mid Black. You will soon find this ink wipes quickly & evenly from your plate to give bright‚ intense prints.
Bone Black
PBk9 (C.I 77267) Calcined bone black
Opaque
Lightfast rating (BWS) 8
item number: BKC 1824
A strong, warm-toned black made from genuine Charred-bone black pigment ( PBr9) with high viscosity & high tack. Our bone black works well for both LINE & TONE.
This ink is quite stiff and will tend to increase contrast.
Lamp Black
PBk6 (C.I 77267) Amorphous carbon black
Semi opaque
Lightfast rating (BWS) 8
item number: BKC 1925
A medium viscosity and medium tack. Easy to wipe. Suitable for drypoint.
Soft Black
PBk7 (C.I 77266) Furnace carbon black
Opaque
Lightfast rating (BWS) 8
item number: BKC 1538
A versatile‚ carbon black ink . Soft Black is very firm in the tube, but relaxes under the knife to provide a soft and ‘buttery’ consistency. Wipes evenly and easily but relatively slowly to give full control over the amount of ink left on the plate.
