Traditional inks for intaglio printmaking.

As a manufacturer of fine art printmaking inks for generations, Cranfield follows historic formulations that have basically remained unchanged for centuries but still offer equally powerful and highly resistant results in a wide range of inks and for all types of intaglio techniques.

Cranfield Traditional Etching ink can be cleaned with petrol or vegetable oil (gentler on the printer and the planet!)
It contains no siccatives and uses high-quality pigments with a light fastness on the Blue Wool Scale (BWS) of at least 6/8 (ranging from "very good" to "exceptional").

Some specific and additional information:

Sepia
Although not strictly Black‚ our Sepia is a beautifully smooth‚ easy to wipe‚ well saturated ink which can be used on its own or mixed with any of our Blacks to add a subtle depth and warmth.

Extender
Our most popular and traditional extender which mixes easily with all the Cranfield Tradtional Etching Inks. Add to reduce strength and increase the transparency of your inks. This extender is an ink like all the colours in the range‚ it is simply made with a transparent pigment.

Transparent Lake White
Our most transparent extender with increased stiffness. This is popular with printmakers who wish to reduce the strength of an ink whilst preserving the integrity of shade and body.

Opaque White
Titanium White is the most opaque ink the range with the greatest covering power.

Zinc White
Zinc White is a slight more transparent than Opaque White with a little less covering power and a bluer undertone. This can be used to add luminosity to coloured inks. It reduces strength whilst preserving brightness and purity.

Silver and Gold
Cranfield Silver and Gold printmaking Inks are ‘dual purpose’ and will work beautifully for both etching and relief printing.

Mixing based on the primary system

The 3 process colours combined with Mid Black, Opaque White and Transparent Base, can be mixed to produce a wide variety of colours and tones. To find out more, refer to the "Cranfield Traditional Etching Basic Ink Set" or download the instructional documents at the bottom of the page.
