Carborundum technique

Carborundum (or silicon carbide) is an abrasive powder that has been diverted from its original purpose and used in ‘non-traditional’ intaglio. It gives its name to this technique, which produces deep blacks, very rich textures and a strong, visible substance in prints

General principle of the technique:
Unlike traditional intaglio (where a matrix is hollowed out with tools or chemically using acids), carborundum engraving is an additive technique that can be classified in the collagraphy family: relief is created by adding material to the plate rather than removing it.
