Tarlatan is a fine-mesh cotton fabric that is loosely woven and finished.
Traditionally, the printer prepares three handfuls (or balls) of varying sizes (up to 70cm by 10m) after lightly removing the finish by rubbing the tarlatan in all directions.
The first handful is used to collect most of the excess ink while distributing the ink into the sizes. The second is used to push the wiping until the engraving on the plate is visible. The third handful finishes removing the ink.
The wiping is normally followed by a palm wipe or a tissue wipe to remove the light film of residual ink.
